The concern is valid
Many parents are already worried about screens. A coding class can sound like adding more time in front of a laptop to a week that already has too much digital noise.
The distinction that matters is passive consumption versus active creation. Watching videos, scrolling, and clicking through games are not the same as designing, debugging, explaining, and improving a project.
What healthy computing time looks like
Healthy coding time has a visible goal. A child is trying to make something happen: a character move, a quiz keep score, a program respond to input, a web page explain an idea.
It also includes moments away from the screen: sketching, planning, talking through a bug, presenting work, and reflecting on what changed. The computer is the workshop, not the whole lesson.
What parents should look for
Ask whether the program produces projects, explanations, and evidence of skill. Ask whether students spend time debugging and making decisions, or whether they mostly watch and follow.
A good coding program should make your child more thoughtful about technology, not merely more attached to it. They should begin to see apps and games as things people design, not magic they consume.
Our approach
Code Camp treats computing as a creative studio. Students build real artifacts, receive mentor feedback, and progress through milestones only when they can demonstrate capability.
That is still screen time, but it is active, purposeful, and bounded by visible learning goals.
