The invisible-progress problem
Most parents who enrol their children in a coding program face the same problem within a few weeks: they cannot tell if anything is actually being learned. Their child comes home saying it was 'fun' or 'fine.' There is no homework. No test scores. No report card.
This is not a small problem. A program that feels engaging but teaches nothing is worse than nothing — it occupies the time and money a substantive program could have used. Knowing how to evaluate real progress protects your investment.
What progress evidence actually looks like
Real learning in coding is observable. A child who has genuinely learned a concept can do something they could not do before — build a specific kind of project, solve a specific type of problem, explain a specific mechanism. If you cannot point to a concrete 'can now' capability, the learning has not been confirmed.
The best programs make this evidence explicit. At Code Camp, every milestone completion is paired with a plain-language capability statement: 'Your child can now build an interactive scene where objects respond to user input using sequence and event-based programming.' That statement is only written when a mentor has watched the child demonstrate the skill.
Compare this to programs that issue certificates for attendance, or platforms that mark a lesson 'complete' when a child clicks 'Next.' Neither of these tell you anything about actual capability.
Questions to ask any coding program
Before enrolling, ask: What does completion of a lesson mean, exactly? Is it self-reported, auto-marked, or confirmed by an instructor? What does my child produce by the end of each month? Can I see examples? How will I know when my child has genuinely learned a skill versus just moved through the material?
The answers tell you everything. A program with real mastery checkpoints will have specific, confident answers. A program that primarily measures completion will be vague — because completion is easy to achieve without learning.
What to look for at home
Children who are genuinely learning to code will occasionally surprise you. They will notice the logic behind something in daily life and name it — 'that is just a conditional, like in Scratch.' They will get frustrated by a problem and persist until it works. They will want to show someone what they built.
These are not things you can teach directly. They emerge from a program that makes students think rather than click. If your child is engaged but passive — watching, copying, following steps without understanding why — the program is probably not building durable skills.
The most honest test: ask your child to build something specific without following a tutorial. Not a complex project — something small and within their band. If they can, the learning is real. If they can only reproduce steps they've memorised, the depth is not there yet.
